Just as May 25th is important to me, September 13th is also a very special day at HostGator. It’s the day for those who make magic happen, those who are passionate about solving problems, who drink coffee, and who love video games. Do you know what day it is? It’s Developer Day.
But what do you imagine it’s like to be a developer at HostGator? Are they all geeky, coffee-crazy, rock and TV-loving people? Are they shy? To answer that question, I decided to write this post, to pay special tribute to our heroes in the tech world and tell you what the development department is like at HostGator .
Breaking stereotypes
While talking to the developers, or as we affectionately call them, “devs,” I learned many interesting things that I couldn’t help but share with you. To begin with, the development area, like almost the entire company, is colorful, thanks asia mobile number list to the kanban-filled Post-its on every wall, which, following the agile methodology, show the tasks each area is working on. A 3-liter thermos is not enough for the amount of coffee they drink; and the office of Vandré, the area leader, is entirely decorated with Legos and superheroes.
Describing a developer at HostGator is no easy task. If you think they’re all the same, you’re mistaken. They may all have something similar. However, we have all kinds here: tall, short, bearded, chubby, single, married, rockers, and much more. But the most important thing, as Vandré says, is ” having the best people and, at the same time, the best professionals .”
Are all developers geeks?
Being a developer often involves carrying the stereotype of a geeky, coffee-loving, video game-loving, and rock star. Talking to the devs (although they say they’re shy, they love to chat), I discovered they’re a pretty diverse team in every sense.
With tastes as varied as heavy metal and Harry Potter to Amelie Poulain and American Gods, it’s a truly unique team because, as Katreen says, “We’re very different and at the same time totally alike. Being programmers gives us the ability to be quick, think more logically, and make jokes that few people understand; but at the same time, we’re unique; each of us has our own story, our own tastes . ”
Here at HostGator, there’s no rule for being a developer. For example, Victor, a front-end developer, practices calisthenics (yes, I didn’t pricing in retail and e-commerce: 5 examples of strategies know what that was either). Andreson, also a front-end developer, loves the waves and surfs in his spare time. Katreen is a jazz dancer, Lucas has been a Scout since 1998, and Matheus is a World of Warcraft fan.
Logical Thinking and Creativity
Another interesting aspect was having a conversation about creativity, since many people think that because they have a more logical way of thinking, web developers are not creative; but it turns out to be quite the opposite. For most HostGator devs, the best part of being in this profession is having the ability to create things from scratch and without depending on anyone . As the saying goes, ” making things happen magically .” And who wouldn’t like to have the ability to create a small world? In fact, it was with this idea of creating worlds and video games that many of them began their journey in the world of programming since they were children.
Although they love to claim they solve challenges as if by magic, the truth is that this ” magic ” takes hours and hours of study from the moment you decide to enter the world of programming; which for a developer isn’t that difficult; not because they think they’re geniuses, but because they love to study and, as Vandré says, ” once a programmer, always a programmer .”
What is it like to be a web developer?
This is perhaps the most difficult question you can ask a developer. Technology and the world of systems programming involve so many things that it’s really hard to explain, especially to friends or family who don’t understand much about computers.
